History


Adoor, also Adur (malayalam:അടൂ) is a small town in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala state, India  spread over an area of 20.42 km2.


It is believed that the name Adoor is derived from "attipperu avakaasam ulla ooru". Vanjipuzha Chief (Land Lord from Chengannur) got the "attipperu avakasam" (full ownership without tax) from the Maharaja of Travancore


As of 2001 India census, Adoor had a population of 28,943. Males constitute 48% of the population and females 52%. Adoor has an average literacy rate of 85%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 49% of the males and 51% of females literate. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Major Attractions

The main attraction in Adoor is the Krishna Sree Parthasarathy Temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, known here by the name of Parthasarathy. It is one of the oldest Krishna temples in Kerala. The Chandanapally Valiyapally Church is located 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) from Adoor.Chembuduppu (meaning choosing of copper vessels) is a special ritual that has a place in Kerala's cultural history, which take place in Chandanapally every year. Hermon Aramana, the headquarters of Adoor Diocese of Marthoma Church, and the Marthoma Youth Center are other culturally important places in Adoor. Adoor Immanuel Marthoma Church, St. Mary's Orthodox Church, and Sacred Heart Malankara Catholic Church etc. are churches in the heart of town. Kadampanad, St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral, Kannamkode St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral, and the centre of Adoor Diosis of orthodox church is also located near Kannamcode Cathedral. The cathedral has two branches, chapels, in Kottamukal and in Pannivizha. Mor Ignatius Jacobite Syrian Church, MC Road, Vadakadathukavu, Adoor Kannamkode MarthomaChurch Vellakulangara and St. Gregorios church. Peringanad are some of the other churches of importance in this region.

Mannadi Temple which has historical importance due to the sacrifice of Travancore DiwanVelu Thampi Dalava (1765–1809), who fought the British Raj is 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from Adoor. Maramadi Malsaram (bull race) is an event that is held at Anandapally, which is a few kilometers away from Adoor. This event attracts national and international visitors. The event, which takes place right after the harvest, is aimed at promoting the spirit of farmers.
